Grants for Students

Grants for Students; applying is not as difficult as you think!

Whether you are a returning student or heading to college for the first time, understanding financial assistance and grants for students is extremely important. The following is a brief description of the college grant application process:

FAFSA
Most students, unless searching for private grant funding will need to fill out and return an FAFSA form. Filling out the application does take quite a bit of time, but it is important to fill the form out completely and correctly. For the past few years the government has made it even easier for students to complete their application forms by making the necessary documents available online. While obtaining their application online a student can also find an in-depth explanation of all FAFSA requirements, acceptance procedure and even tips to increase their chances of receiving certain grants.

Pell Grants
For some students, Pell grants mean the difference between continuing their education and prematurely entering the workforce. By filling out an FAFSA form all students are automatically made eligible to receive Pell grant money. Pell grants are the most common, and easily obtainable of all government issued grants. The amount of Pell grants does change with each passing school year; however those who have been accepted for student loans through their bank or loan center will be approved for the maximum amount of Pell grant funds.

Federal Grants
In addition to Pell grants there are also a number of specialized grants which are made available through the government every year. Some examples include the Federal Educational Opportunity Grant, the Academic Competitiveness Grant and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant.

The specialized grants for students mentioned above as well as other grants can all be found either online at www.grants.gov or as listed in the financial aid section of some college’s website. Specialized grants are often quite competitive and any student who is interested in applying should speak to a financial aid representative for helpful suggestions and guidance to increase their chances of acceptance.
